Salary of Oral Surgeons in the U.S. - Jake Hardin

Oral surgeons are in school for a very minimum of 8 years along with 4 or so years of residency, and with that amount of time in higher education, one would expect their salary to be more compared to a lot of other professions.
That being said, oral surgeons in the United States should expect to make something in the six-figure salary range; anywhere from $100,000 to $400,000, with a median salary of around $212,000.

It's safe to say that an oral surgeons annual salary is based off of a number of factors such as location of their specific practice, as well as years of experience in that field.

  • The picture below gives you a good idea of what you should expect to make if you are considering going in the field of oral surgery (including Bonus and Profit sharing).

Why do Oral Surgeons make so much?
  • Surgeons in general are usually responsible for the treating and diagnosing of a number of conditions, while oral surgeons focus mainly on conditions that involve the mouth/jaw region.
  • The requirements to become an oral surgeon are extremely tedious; the years of training and learning ensures us that these professionals are the best of the best, which is why they get paid such a large salary.
  • When performing surgery, there are most always various risks involved while in operation, so these surgeons have to get paid the amount they do simply because of risk, cost of operation, insurance, and a number of other factors.
  • payscale.com explains that this position "requires excellent bedside manner and the ability to explain medical terms to those who may not have medical knowledge"
Quick Overview of Various Oral Surgeon Tasks:
  • Examine/diagnose different patients
  • treating tumors, cysts, traumatized teeth, various deformities and cancers in the mouth
  • Perform reconstructive surgery on regions around the mouth/jaw
  • Dental and Jaw surgery
  • handle anesthesia
  • Provide treatment plans for their patients
As you can see there are a number of procedures and operations that oral surgeons have to perform. With this many responsibilities (and most of them being difficult ones) it is more than reasonable to have the median salary of an oral surgeon sit at around 215,000 US dollars.
